Degree Type:  Bachelor of Arts

Requirements (30 hours/credits)

  • Students must earn a C- or higher in all courses within the major, including those that make up the concentration. 
  • Students may not take courses pass/fail unless the course is graded solely on a pass/fail basis.
  • 600-level courses will not count towards the B.A. degree in Linguistics.
  • Credits may be counted only once toward a degree.
  • Students majoring in linguistics and minoring or majoring in cognitive science may not use the same courses to count towards both, with the exception of LING 101.
  • To assist students with curricular planning, please download the “Progress and Planning Form for the Linguistics Major. This form should be completed and submitted to your advisor. An electronic copy should also be emailed to Dr. Andreasen, Director of Undergraduate Study (robina@udel.edu).

Five more courses drawn from LING or the following list: 15 Credits

o    Any course cross-listed with LING.
o    CGSC 170: Intro to Cog Sci 
o    CGSC 496: Psycholinguistics
o    PHIL 205: Logic
  • Four of these five must be 200, 300, or 400-level.
  • It is recommended that students take LING 471 Discovering Human Language (which also counts as a DLE) and CGSC 496: Psycholinguistics as part of their electives.
  • CGSC 170 provides a good foundation for CGSC 485, both of which have sections on language and cognition.
  • Students major in Linguistics and majoring and minoring in Cognitive Science may not use the same courses for both degrees, with the exception of LING 101.
  • Double majors -- who take two a B.S. and a B.A or those who major across colleges -- no longer need to take 30 extra credits, as long as the degrees are concurrent.
  • 600-level courses will not count towards the B.A. in Linguistics
  • Students must earn a C- or better in all courses for the major.
